Volunteers & Students
In this section you (a volunteer working with children) will find information on how to meet your responsibilities under the WWC legislation.
If you are Volunteer Coordinator go to the Employers and Volunteer Coordinators section of this website.
Are you a volunteer?
The WWC Screening Unit considers a volunteer to be a person carrying out child-related work on behalf of others for no financial reward.
A person who receives payments that just cover the costs of carrying out their child-related work is considered to receive “no financial reward”.
Volunteers under 18 (this includes students on placement) are exempt under the Act and therefore are not permitted to apply for a WWC Check. Where such applications are received by the Unit they will not be processed and they will be returned. A new application will need to be made when they turn 18.
Do you know about the parent volunteer exemption? Some parents who do volunteer work in connection with their child may be exempt from having to apply for a WWC Check. Find out more.
Remember: A “Child” is a person under the age of 18 years.
